As a result of the numerous extensions over the years we had ended up in a house in which many of the rooms were in effect ‘corridors’, both downstairs and up. We engaged Building Tectonics to do a Feasibility Scheme to re-design the interior layout. They came up with the idea to take out the existing stairs and move them to a central position which was radical but resolved many issues at a stroke. It gave us an entrance hallway, something that was not a problem when the house was a two up two down cottage but was much lacking in the house as it had developed. This was a real bonus since this was not even on our wish list.

Repositioning the stairs allowed the rooms to be connected together and together with the removal of a redundant chimney breast and various other structural alterations, gave us a house which is far more practical, where all rooms are accessible from the new hall and landing. The introduction of the central stairs has also helped to bring light to the centre of the house, which was lacking before the alterations. Convenience, light, saleability, beauty all in one hit. We have now engaged Building Tectonics to look at other aspects of the house and we wait with eager anticipation to see what they come up with.
